When a monk addressed the Haryana Assembly on August 26, the country took notice. The attention was drawn for various reasons, right from a nude monk delivering sermons in a state assembly to him saying, “It is the duty of every wife to accept the discipline of her husband.”
As the picture of the monk delivering his speech in the assembly became a topic of serious discussion, it left people on social media divided, and many on religious lines. While many urged that political discourse should be kept aloof from religion, others simply could not get over the fact that a Jain monk in nude was not obscenity but an integral part of Jainism, one of the sect – the Digambaras.
One such individual urging that there is no place for religion in politics, was singer-composer Vishal Dadlani. Dadlani took to Twitter to express his displeasure about how a monk could address a state assembly and sharing the picture of the monk wrote: “If you voted for these people, YOU are responsible for this absurd nonsense! #NoAchcheDin, just #NoKachcheDin.”
Well, his dig towards the BJP-led Haryana government led to a serious backlash as he faced flak even from his ‘friends’ and found himself in cold waters.
Dadlani, who is also an active supporter of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and close to Delhi CM Arvind Kejriwal, got slammed for his ‘disrespectful’ remark. AAP convener, Kejriwal and Delhi minister Satyendar Jain took to Twitter and criticised Dadlani. While Kejriwal in an indirect tweet, asked Dadlani to stop, Jain on behalf of Dadlani apologised for his comment, that hurt religious sentiments of others.
What followed next for the entire day was people slamming Dadlani and he apologising for hurting sentiments. Dadlani said, “I apologise if I’ve upset Jain feelings. The intent was to ridicule the merger of religion & governance, and not any religion in particular.” However, he stuck to his point that he was only asking, “religion and governance can be separated, for India’s sake.”
As the furore grew on Twitter, angry and disappointed Dadlani offered to quit political work. He took to seigned on the social media saying, “It feel bad that I hurt my Jain friends & my friends @ArvindKejriwal & @SatyendarJain .I hereby quit all active political work/affiliation.”
Here are few reactions to what Dadlani said:
What Arvind Kejriwal had to say
Jain apologiosed for him
I apologise for hurting feelings of Jain community by my friend@VishalDadlani. I seek kshama from Muni Shri Tarun Sagar ji Maharaj.
@VishalDadlani you have managed to offend quite a few people... Jains and non Jains. it's best to think before uttering hurtful words.
@VishalDadlani if you don't know the real principle of #Jainismthen stop commenting on it.I know how pure my religion is and its belief.

@shtl1980 @VishalDadlani @RitaG74 disrespecting all faiths except muslims is a new trends among these seculars and apptards
While Dadlani was being criticised, the monk too was slammed for his analogy that a wife must accept all orders from her husband.

The fact that #TarunSagar gets invited to speak at the #HaryanaAssembly should not come as a surprise. This is why.pic.twitter.com/PnLORJ5EoA
The fact of the matter is how can one call #India a 'democracy' when religious leaders like #TarunSagar get invited to speak their bile?
Tarun Sagar ji Maharaj is a very reverred saint, not just for jains but everyone. Those showing disrespect is unfortunate and shud stop
.@ArvindKejriwal Disrespect must stop and the Sermon is most welcome. BUT NOT IN THE ASSEMBLY.#VishalDadlani is absolutely right. #Jains
Jain religious leader Tarun Sagar had MLAs cutting across party lines at the Haryana Assembly listening in rapt attention as he delivered his lecture for some forty minutes. He spoke on female foeticide and even took a potshots at Pakistan.
