Surgical Strikes Began At Midnight, How They Were Conducted

NEW DELHI:  The army's surgical strikes across the Line of Control began after midnight on Wednesday and went on till dawn, sources said today, adding that scores of terrorists were killed. As details of the operation emerged, the government briefed top political leaders and Chief Ministers.
Here's the 10 point cheat sheet
  1. 1. The strikes were conducted up to two km in Pakistani territory in terrain that included hills, forests and mountains, army sources have said. "Full surprise was achieved, there were no Indian casualties," the sources said.
  2. 2. Eight terrorist launch pads were targeted over a significant area. The launch pads - each had 30-40 terrorists - had been under surveillance for about a week.
  3. 3. The army said there were "massive casualties of terrorists, their guides and handlers." Sources say India has evidence of damage inflicted, possibly video footage, which will be released when appropriate.
  4. 4. "Our forces have gone deep in and come back before sunrise," government sources said. Pakistan responded with "speculative fire", against no specific target.
  5. 5. A combination of ground forces and helicopter-borne paracommandos were involved in the strikes.
  6. 6. According to the army, the terrorists were planning major attacks in Jammu and Kashmir and in metros.
  7. 7. All forces along the Line of Control including the Indian Air Force have been kept on high alert.
  8. 8. Villages near the border in Jammu and Kashmir and Punjab are being vacated as a precaution.
  9. 9. Home Minister Rajnath Singh spoke to Chief Ministers and senior political leaders and briefed them on the strikes.
  10. 10. The government has informed the President, Vice President and former prime minister Manmohan Singh about the surgical strikes.
